Leo Stanley Stanis

Leo “Chappy” Stanley Stanis, 89, passed peacefully on September 4 at Charlotte Hall Veteran’s Home in Charlotte Hall, MD. He was born in South Bend, Indiana.

Chappy began his career in the Army, serving in WWII. He also served in the U.S. Reserves Seminarian, and was a U.S. Navy Chaplain which included one year in the Vietnam War. Chappy retired as a Commander in the Navy. Medals that he was awarded were the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, WWII Victory Medal, and a number of other meritorious medals.

After retiring from the military, Chappy joined the Federal Government as a civilian employee serving as a recreational assistant at Andrews Air Force Base. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from Bob Jones University and received a Master of Divinity from the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

He pastored at several churches in North Carolina; Jordans Chapel Baptist Church in Mt. Olive; Newton Grove Baptist Church in Newton Grove; North Street Baptist Church in Raleigh. In addition to several in Alexandria, Virginia; Duke Street Baptist; Fair-Park Baptist Church; and The Fountains at Washington House.

Chappy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Alexandria. His hobbies included photography, Statute of Liberty collector, billiards, and playing the harmonica.

He is survived by his sister, Marlene Shaw of Indianapolis, Indiana; grandson, Tyler Charles Stanis of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, daughter in-law, Tricia (Mark) Weeks (formerly Stanis) and Lauren of Mechanicsville, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Stanis; son, Gregory Stanis; and brother, Eugene Stanis.

Interment will be held on a later date at Arlington National Cemetery with honors.
