With heavy hearts and the comfort of faith, we commemorate the life of Bernadette Chapman, who passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on February 6, 2024.
Born on December 29, 1928, Bernadette lived a life devoted to faith and family. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Bernadette was the youngest of five siblings. Her parents, Stasia and Kasimir Piekarski, were of first-generation Polish descent. Upon graduation from Mount Assisi Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Bernadette attended business school, worked as a secretary for Chrysler Corp., and then as a bookkeeper for her husband’s painting company while raising her family. She was also known to be a devoted Steeler fan and lover of all things Pittsburgh.
A resident of Old Town Alexandria since 2005, Bernadette was a cherished parishioner of The Basilica of St. Mary. She found comfort in the service of the priests and Eucharistic Ministers who visited her regularly during the past few years. Their devoted service brought her and her family peace, especially when she became homebound.
Bernadette was preceded in death by her loving husband, Louis F. Chapman, in 1991. She is survived by her two daughters, Jean, and husband Tom Wright (Frederick, MD); and Luanne, and husband Jim Griffin, (Alexandria, VA). She was a devoted grandmother to her three grandchildren, Carolyn and Matthew Wright, and Victoria Griffin, and a cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Bernadette at the Basilica of St. Mary’s, 310 S. Royal St., Alexandria, VA on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 10:30 a.m. A Visitation will be held from 4 pm - 8 pm on Monday, February 12, at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home.
