Betty Lawson

Betty Jean Lawson, 96, of Alexandria, Va. passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday June 12th.  Betty Jean or “Miss Betty”, as many called her, had been battling many illnesses over the past year and a half.  She fought back after several hospital visits during this time and was living in her home cared for by her 3 "Angels": Annie, Bea and Gladys. Without them loving her and caring for her she would not have stayed with us this long.  The family is truly grateful for them. Her two daughters were also deeply involved in her care so her wish to stay in her home was honored.

Betty Jean was a retired budget analyst for the FAA.  After her retirement from the government, she worked at Gunston Hall doing an assortment of jobs, including selling her famous Pepper Jelly, she enjoyed every minute of it.  She also loved bowling, the Redskins, President Obama, her mountain house, gardening, camping and road trips, which she took many. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Alexandria for 63 years and she definitely loved our Lord.

Betty Jean was a Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother.  She was a single parent who gave all that she had for her 3 children.  Betty Jean is survived by her sister-in-law, Lila Dye of Unionville, Va., her daughters Maureen Lawson of Springfield, Va. and Deborah Carr (Dale) of Palmyra, Va. and her son Craig Lawson from Alexandria, Va.  Betty has 3 grandchildren, Dale Carr, Jr. (Missy) of Centerville, OH, Tiffany Carr of Cambridge, MA. and Lauren Barden (Brandon) of Centreville, Va.  Her great-grandchildren, all from Centerville, OH, Mallory, Ashley and Natalie Carr.  She is also survived by a niece, Dianne Horton (Jamie) of Charlotte, N.C. and a longtime neighborhood friend, Jean Plaskett.

Betty Jean loved working in her yard and was very proud of it.  She was the matriarch of West Mount Ida Avenue/Sycamore Street and was loved by all.  She will be missed and the neighborhood will never be the same.

In the fall, the family will have a Memorial/Celebration of Life Service at Grace Episcopal Church.
