Curtis Buck Hunter, Jr.

October 6, 1942 ~ August 30, 2020 (age 77) 77 Years Old

Tribute

Passed away August 30, 2020 at Fairfax Hospital from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident.

A long-time resident of Alexandria, Va., Curtis was born in Burlington, N.C. and grew up in N.C.  He received his BA in history from U.N.C. Chapel Hill.  After serving in the army for 3 years, he enjoyed a long career with the Veterans’ Administration, retiring as a budget analyst in 2006.  He was a member of the D.C. Randonneurs Biking Club and had volunteered with Hospice and Meals on Wheels.

An avid biker since retirement, Curtis rode across the U.S. with two friends in 2011, and leaves many happy memories of tandem biking with his wife along the Mt. Vernon Trail, across the Erie Canal, and along the rivers of Germany.   As a teenager, Curtis had a passion for flying and obtained his private pilot’s license at the age of 18.  He ran several Marine Corps marathons and also learned to sail, providing more happy memories of exploring the Chesapeake with his wife and family.  He loved nature, wildlife, gardening, music, and books and was always fascinated by the latest in technology and science.   He was protective and deeply caring of his family, and he will be remembered by many for his compassion, kindness, and generosity.

Curtis was the loving and devoted husband of Carole R. Hunter for 55 years.  He is survived by his daughter Rebecca of Alexandria, Va., son Stephen and wife Amanda of Chicago, Ill., and sister Eleanor Herndon of Greensboro N.C.  He was preceded in death by his son Michael and his sister Harriet.

There will be a memorial gathering at a later date.  Anyone wishing to contribute to his memory may donate to one of his favorite charities: Capital Hospice of Fairfax, Va., Make-a-Wish Foundation; or KIVA.
