George A. Chadwick III

June 24, 1938 ~ November 19, 2022 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Tribute

George A. Chadwick, III, often known as “Chip,” died peacefully on Saturday, November 19, in Reston, Virginia.

George was born in Washington, D. C., on June 24, 1938, to the late Eleanor Margerum Chadwick and George A. Chadwick, Jr. He grew up in the District of Columbia and in Calvert County, Maryland. Alexandria, Virginia, was his home for the past 51 years.

George’s career in the Patent and Trademark Office spanned over 41 years. He interrupted his service in the Federal Government for five years of study towards a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern history at the University of Chicago, one year of which he spent at the American University in Cairo, Egypt, and doing research through parts of the Middle East and Europe. George’s life-long interest in history led him to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Washington & Lee University and George Washington University, respectively.

George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margie, son Jay Chadwick (Leslie), daughter Laura Chadwick, grandson James Chadwick, granddaughter Eleanor Chadwick, and brother Charles Chadwick (Jane Ann), step-brother Dan Seamans (Wyckie), step-sister Jane Adams (Paul), and step-mother Avaleen Chadwick. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.

George was widely read and had many interests. He liked to cook and read about cooking; he was an avid supporter of the fine arts and enjoyed classical music, especially opera. George served as a Commissioner of the Arts in the City of Alexandria, was president of the Alexandria Performing Arts Association, was a member of the Arts Forum, and was active on the George Washington’s Birthday Celebration Committee. He established a program to bring arts events to senior living facilities in Alexandria.

George was never happier than when walking in the neighborhood with his beagle, Toby, making friends with other dogs and their owners all along the way.

All are invited to a funeral service for George at noon on Friday, December 2, 2022, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 100 W.
