Tribute

George “Junior” Cook, of Alexandria, VA, passed away on January 12, 2020, at the age of 81.

George was born on July 4, 1938 in Caroline County, VA to the late George Henry and Rosie Lee Washington Cook.  He grew up with his sister, Anna Mae (Fredericksburg), and his brothers James, Lewis, and Roger, who have preceded him in death.

When George was 12 years old, his family moved to Alexandria, where he graduated from G.W. High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy as a First Class Seaman from 1955-1959.

Upon return, George fell in love with Virginia “Ginny” Johnson.  George and Ginny were married in 1959 and celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss this past June.

George worked as a Building Engineer/Property Manager for Hunting Towers (11 years), Marina Towers (2 years), Northern Virginia Community College (6 years), Guiffre Distributing (32 years), and Queen of Apostles Catholic Church (8 years).

In his younger years, George appeared regularly on the Milt Grant Show and at other local venues.  George shared his love of music and passion for singing and playing guitar with everyone he knew.  As an avid football fan, George was often found cheering on the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturdays and in the stands at FedEx Field rooting on the Washington Redskins on Sundays.  He enjoyed sports of all kinds, his morning meetings with friends at McDonald’s, and his charitable work at church and at his children’s and grandchildren’s schools.

George served as President of the Optimist Club of Alexandria and as a Eucharistic minister at Queen of Apostles.

George’s Elvis impersonations, sense of humor, strong work ethic, and dedication to his family and friends will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, Ginny, George is survived by his son, Martin Cook, daughter Kelly Jackson (husband Rick), granddaughters Crystal Krauss and Kayleigh Cook, grandsons Benjamin Cook and Ricky Jackson (wife Alison), and great-grandchildren Aiden, Madilynne, Olyvia, Aleeya, and Cora.

Family and friends are invited to attend viewings on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, located at 1500 W.
