Tribute

Gloria Brogan Flanagan, 70, of Alexandria, Virginia, born June 2nd, 1952, passed away on May 15th after a battle with urothelial cancer.

Raised in Binghamton, NY and New Brunswick, NJ, Gloria moved to the Washington, DC area in the fall of 1970 to attend Georgetown University. On the first day of classes freshman year, Gloria met William (Bill) Flanagan; the two were married in June of 1975. Gloria earned her BSFS in International Affairs and Juris Doctor from Georgetown University. Gloria worked in postal rate law at the US Postal Service following law school until after having her first child in 1983. A caring and nurturing mother, Gloria had three children and stayed home to raise them, while also running her local citizens association. Gloria went back to work in the mid-90s, assisting Alexandria City Councilwoman Lois Walker. After Walker lost her reelection in 2000, Gloria transitioned to working for the Alexandria Small Business Development Center, where she would serve as Associate Director until her passing. At the Alexandria SBDC, Gloria helped thousands of Alexandrian entrepreneurs start and grow their small businesses. A passionate cook, baker, and hostess, Gloria was happiest when entertaining family and friends at her Alexandria home, especially at Christmas.

She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2010. She is survived by her three children: sons William (Billy) and James (Jim), and daughter Kerry; sisters Patricia Frantz of West Chester, PA and Margaret “Peggy” Woods of Wallingford, PA, and brother James “Jim” Brogan of Point Pleasant, NJ; four godchildren; fourteen nieces and nephews; eleven grandnieces and nephews; and countless beloved friends.

Her wake will be at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria on May 23rd from 4-8pm, and her funeral will be held at 10:30am on May 24th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown, where she was a parishioner for over 50 years. She will be laid to rest at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Alexandria in a private ceremony at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made to Together We Bake or the Father McKenna Center, both charities that were close to her heart.
