Hellmuth B. Bernhards (Age 94)
Of Dagsboro, DE, formerly of Prince George's County, MD and Washington, DC, died Wednesday, February 24, 2021 in Alexandria, VA. Born in Washington D.C., Mr. Bernhards was a son of German immigrants who joined the U.S. Navy in 1944, following graduation from Eastern High School.
He served active duty in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war he began his career as an officer for the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. Following his retirement from MPD he was employed with the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission. He was married for 67 years to his wife Emily J. Bernhards, who passed away in 2019. He is survived by his three sons, William, Robert, and John Bernhards and their wives; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A private service for immediate family will be held Saturday, March 6 in the chapel at Everly Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA 22314. Interment to follow at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, MD.
