Nguyễn Vĩnh Hưng was born on September 22, 1942 to Nguyễn Văn Mạnh and Marie Bùi Quang Đồn in Nam Vang (Phnom Penh, Cambodia), the youngest of four sons. He passed away on May 26, 2020 at the age of 77 in the comfort of his home in Alexandria, Virginia.
Hung was loved by many. He was a generous, considerate, thoughtful, funny, and warm man. Hung loved traveling (especially to Paris and on cruises), enjoyed fishing, appreciated delicious food and drink, and was always on the lookout for a tennis court to perfect his serve. He was a respected leader and member of the DC/Northern Virginia Vietnamese community, and enjoyed putting his charismatic public speaking skills to use as an MC for galas, weddings, and events. Hung was involved with many philanthropic endeavors throughout his life, and most recently spent the last months before he passed raising funds as the president of the Sai Gon Gia Dinh Association to donate face masks to the local community.
Hung is survived by his longtime partner Lan Huong, daughter An Thu Nguyen-Habermann, former wife Kim Chi Tran Luong, son-in-law Brian Habermann, grandchildren Charlotte Habermann and Harrison Habermann, and brothers Nguyễn Vĩnh Tuyền and Nguyễn Vĩnh Khánh. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Nguyễn Vĩnh Thạch.
A private family celebration of life will be held at Everly-Wheatley on Friday, June 5. His ashes will be interred at Chùa Vạn Hạnh in Centreville at a later date.
