Katherine "KK" Harris McCart

November 21, 1974 ~ September 3, 2022 (age 47) 47 Years Old

Tribute

McCart, Katherine Harris, “KK”, passed away suddenly on September 3, 2022.  Born November 21, 1974 in Richmond, Virginia, KK was full of life and never met a stranger.  She is gone far too soon, but, thanks to her infectious personality and boundless energy, she will never be forgotten.

She was a graduate of St. Catherine’s School and The University of Virginia, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and earned her Bachelor’s of Science and her Master’s of Teaching, which she put to use as a dynamic and engaging science teacher in both Missouri and Italy. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and true friend to so many.  Never one to say “No”, she was an (over)active volunteer, serving as the Board Chair of Westminster Weekday Preschool, the Commissioner of the Alexandria Lacrosse Club and served many years as a committee member for the Gladney Princess Ball. KK was also the St. Stephen’s St. Agnes Gala Chair and was a member of the National Charity League, serving as Grade Level Advisor.

KK was an avid tennis player who will be remembered for her tenacity and frequent one-liners on the court, such as “boogers in a bucket” after the occasional missed shot. KK spent many summers at Camp Lachlan where she was both a camper and counselor; her ever present “sparkle and zest” had a profound impact on all those she touched.  She enjoyed spending her free time at the family cottage, TYHAJO, on Fishing Bay surrounded by family and friends.

KK’s enthusiasm was evident in everything she did. She was passionate about her family, extending family status to a broad mix of friends, many of whom affectionately called her “Mama KK.” An exuberant storyteller who never let facts interrupt a good story, she surrounded those around her with love, hugs, and a contagious laugh. Her zest for life was apparent in her love for family, her weekends at Fishing Bay, travel with her husband, Kevin, and her unwavering loyalty to UVA sports. The only thing KK loved more than playing sports herself was coaching and watching her own children play. Always the one to initiate fun, whether impromptu play with the kids (hers and any others around), or the first cold swim of the summer, KK made the mundane both fun and memorable.

She is survived by her loving husband, Kevin McCart, her three amazing children, Anna, Caroline, Harris, and their yellow lab Lily. She is also survived by her parents, Frances and Tyler Harris and her sister, Rendall Harris, of Richmond, and her brother Tyler Harris, Jr. (Bentley) of Tallahassee, Florida, as well as her uncles, Harry Harris (Gail) and John Harris of Richmond, and Bill Lawrence (Karen) of Raleigh, NC, and aunt Mrs. John Lawrence of Southern Pines, NC. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Maureen McCart and sister-in-law, Maggie Dates of Baltimore, and nieces and nephews: Emily and Caitlin Dates, Henry, Thomas and Eleanor Harris, as well as numerous dear cousins.

Family will receive friends on Sunday, September 11th from 4-7 p.m. at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria, Virginia.  A Service of Witness to the Resurrection is planned for September 12th at 12 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2701 Cameron Mills Road, Alexandria, Virginia.  Livestream available at: https://wpc-alex.org/katherine-mccart-memorial-service/

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in KK’s memory to support the causes that were dear to her and to which she gave so much of herself at: The Katherine Harris McCart Memorial Fund, c/o Davenport & Company LLC, 901 East Cary Street, Suite 1100, Richmond, Virginia 23219.

During this sad time, we want to find a way to honor and celebrate KK’s life well-lived. We were all so fortunate to know her joyful, fun-loving spirit.  She always brightened our days with her infectious smile, quick wit, and hilarious euphemisms.  In that light, we would love to collect “a gracious plenty” of happy memories, stories, pictures, and phrases that will keep KK’s beautiful spirit alive for her children and Kevin.
