Mariko Suzuki Roome passed away at her home in Alexandria, Virginia on Monday, July 1, 2019 from pancreatic cancer. She will be dearly missed by those who love her.
Mariko was born November 18, 1932 in Tokyo, Japan. Mariko was fluent in English, so after completing her degree in Industrial Art from Gakushuin University, her work in both government and business included that of translator/interpreter in Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan. It was here where she met her husband, Jack, a naval officer stationed in Japan. After marriage on December 30, 1964 in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, their first home was in Denver, Colorado, followed by San Diego, where their first son, Brian was born. Jack was then transferred to Norfolk, Virginia where their second son, Jon Paul was born. In future years, the family moved eight additional times to duty stations which included Hawaii, Taiwan, England and Japan. The family finally settled in Alexandria, Virginia for 35 years where Mariko was active in the Washington/Tokyo Women’s Club, serving as the Scholarship and Concert Group Manager.
Mariko had a teaching degree in flower arrangement (Ikebana) and taught friends while in England. In later life she enjoyed this art as well as gardening. She dearly loved her grandchildren, Lira, Luca and Nash, so they filled her thoughts every day. She is also survived by her sister, Mieko of Tokyo, Japan and her husband and sons.
her devotion
to her family a wellspring
from which
every gesture great
or small
flowed
