Mildred M. Kilburn "Millie"

Mildred M. Kilburn, age 94, of Alexandria VA, formerly of Oriental, NC and Barrington, RI, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 6, 2022, at Inova Alexandria Hospital.

She was born in Waterford, CT on October 23, 1927 and raised in New London, CT, daughter of the late Elsie (Marquardt) and Wentworth W. Meek, Jr. Millie graduated from The Williams Memorial Institute Class of 1945, and obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut Class of 1949.

In June 1949 she married Ronald H. Kilburn, and they settled in Quaker Hill, CT to raise their growing family. Additional moves were made to New Britain CT, New City NY, and Barrington RI. In 1993 they retired to Oriental NC. Over the years, Millie became a proficient needleworker and seamstress, creating many items for her home and family. Her final challenge was to take up quilting in NC, surrounded by new friends and proficient quilters.

While living in Barrington, Millie took up two significant civic roles. She volunteered for the Barrington League of Women Voters, and served on its Board of Directors, rising through the officers’ positions to become President. She also served on the Building Committee for the renovation of Peck School to repurpose as the Town Library. She was a life member of the Avery Memorial Association of Groton, CT.

In addition to her parents, Millie was predeceased by her only son Laurence (Larry) and her sister Marilyn O’Brien. She is survived by her husband of 73 years Ronald, her two daughters, Cynthia K. Smith and Amy C. Kilburn both of Arlington, VA; and many cousins, nieces and nephews in Connecticut, Pennsylvania and California.

A funeral will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022, 11:00 a.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2701 Cameron Mills Road, Alexandria, VA 22302. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) or to Smile Train.
