Richard R. Hoffman, Sr. was born on May 30, 1949, in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles Hoffman and Christine Sales.  He was number seven of ten children.  Richard lived in St. Louis until he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1967. The Corps became an everlasting central part of Richard’s life.  He completed boot camp at Marine Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California, and arrived in Vietnam in November 1967.  Richard was critically wounded on February 22, 1968, in Hue City, during the Tet Offensive, and was sent to Great Lakes Naval Hospital to recuperate.  Richard was medically discharged from the Marine Corps and eventually worked at the Department of Veterans Affairs until he retired in 2000.

Richard was very active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  His positions included Past All State Commander and Past All State Quartermaster to VFW Post 3150 in Arlington, Virginia.  He also maintained contact with, and attended many of his 3rd Battalion / 5th Marines / Lima Company annual reunions.

After a long illness, Richard passed away peacefully on February 22, 2023, at home with his wife by his side.  He is survived by his wife, Gail Hoffman; his two sons, Richard Hoffman, Jr. (Dana Bell) and Michael Hoffman (Cristina Hoffman); grandchildren Lee Bell Hoffman and Austin Hoffman; his sisters Cindy Demma and Debbie Demma; and numerous nieces and nephews.
