Tribute

Walter Frederick Kidd, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away peacefully in his home Saturday June 20, 2020 at the age of 98.  Always known by his middle name, Fred, was the only son of the late Meng Jeffries and Effie Mae Kidd. 

Fred was born November 27, 1921 in rural Georgia, and grew up in Miami, Florida.  After high school graduation he joined the United States Army Air Force in World War II serving as a flight engineer on B29s out of Roswell Army Airfield, Roswell, New Mexico.  When the war ended he worked as a printer at several locations before serving 31 years with the United States Congress, Government Printing Office retiring as Chief Indexer for the Congressional Record in 1983.

Fred married Claralou Shawler in 1953 and they settled and raised their family in Alexandria, VA.

Fred was a devout Christian, very active in the First Baptist Church of Alexandria, serving many years as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, Jail Outreach Ministries, and volunteer delivering for Meals on Wheels well into his 80’s.  He was a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and supported many philanthropic efforts.  Fred loved his family, he was especially proud of his children and grandchildren and their families.  He enjoyed being at home and also loved to travel with his beloved wife Claralou.  Fred loved the beach and extended family vacations at various beaches were such fun for him and the family.  Fred was proud of and enjoyed working in his garden, especially his roses and camellias.  After retiring he met regularly with friends to play ping pong.

Fred is survived by his wife of 66 years, Claralou Shawler Kidd.  Survivors include daughters Cathryn (Tom) Gray, Viki (John) Clearwater and son John (Julie) Kidd; grandchildren Christopher Kidd, T.J. Gray (Jennifer), Kari Close (Peter), Joshua Clearwater and Kristen Clearwater. Great-grandchildren Clara Jean Close and Campbell Thomas Gray.  Fred is survived by two sisters Frances Pierce and Wanda Eby. His sister Nancy Jaudon preceded him in death.  Fred is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family who he dearly loved.

The family will have a private Celebration of Life on July 18.  Interment with Full Military Honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
